King of Colosseum Round 1 pt.2 results

The second half of Round 1 of the tournament kicked off with Zero-1 MAX ace Shinjiro Ohtani beating AJPW’s monster gaijin Jamal. Despite the size difference, Ohtani was able to survive Jamal’s power game and keep the big man grounded. Jamal managed to escape the King Cobra hold, and Ohtani showed some power by dropping Jamal in a Dragon suplex for a near fall before finally getting the submission with a high angle singles leg crab hold. Jamal’s RO@D partner Taiyo Kea fared better as he got past Tadao Yasuda to advance in the tournament. A back and forth brawl saw Kea trade strikes with the former IWGP champion. Yasuda kicked out of the Hawaiian Smasher and the TKO, but a well timed super-kick was enough to put Yasuda down. Jun Akiyama became the first NOAH representative to not advance as he fell to “Mr. Puroresu” Genichiro Tenryu! A hard hitting back and forth contest, Tenryu was able to escape Akiyama’s Exploder attempts and hit hard chops and guh punches. Akiyama survived a brainbuster, but was put away by Tenryu’s powerbomb. NJPW supernova Shinsuke Nakamura was next to advance over youngster Katsuhiko Nakajima. The two seemed even trading strikes and submission attempts, but Nakamura’s experience gave him the advantage and ultimately the submission win. Next up was undoubtedly the best match of the night as Zero-1 MAX ace Masato Tanaka clashed with Satoshi Kojima of AJPW. Tanaka exploded on Kojima from the opening bell and hit a big Death Valley Bomb and Slash Mountain Bomb for a pair of near falls. Tanaka also hit the Superfly Splash for another near fall before Kojima finally manage mount some offense of his own with a powerbomb followed by a German suplex and a big lariat for a near fall. Tanaka escaped a brainbuster and hit a big revolution style brainbuster for yet another near fall. Kojima rebounded with a big backdrop and another lariat for a 2.9! Just when it looked like things were going Kojima’s way, Tanaka came back and hit the Diamond Dust to win a very competitive contest and advance to the next round of the tournament. Two big veterans clashed next as Shinya Hashimoto took on Akira Taue. Hashimoto rocked Taue early on with heavy kicks and submission attempts, but Taue fought back and gave Hashimoto a big kick off the top rope. Taue hit a backdrop, but Hashimoto came back with a big jumping DDT for a 2 count. Hashimoto hammered Taue some more with heavy kicks before locking on a triangle arm-bar for the submission win. AJPW ace Keiji Mutoh took on young gaijin monster Brock Lesner next. Mutoh immediately went in and attacked Lesner’s legs with low dropkicks, but the big man was able to fight it off with a big powerbomb and an Argentine backbreaker. Lesner managed to hit the Verdict, but Mutoh was too close to the ropes. Mutoh continued his assault on Lesner’s legs and hit a Shining Wizard followed by a moonsault to win the match. It would not be a hat trick for the Three Musketeers as Masahiro Chono was defeated by Naoya Ogawa in the main event of the night. Ogawa took down Chono with submissions and threw heavy punches to keep him down. Chono rallied back with Yakuza kicks and an STF, but Ogawa came back and hit a barrage of STOs to finally put down Chono and move on to th next round. Another random drawing will now be held to determine the pairings for the next round, and is expected to be announced any day now.
